5 Struggles You Can Relate To If You've Done The Big Chop

The Big Chop (BC) is one move that will drastically change your hair game. If you’ve been experiencing stunted growth with your relaxed hair or you just want something different, the big chop might be just what you need. Some people prefer to transition gradually while others prefer to jump right in - whatever style you choose, it is a big decision to make and it does come with its consequences.

You might be thinking, “But it’s my hair?” Haha, when you do the big chop, it almost feels like community property because now everyone wants to make sure that you haven’t lost your mind or are going through a phase, depression or something. Oh well.

The Big Chop was one of the most freeing decisions I ever made and while I really loved it and never regretted my decision, I nearly went crazy with some reactions I kept getting. So if you have done the Big Chop, here are some struggles you will definitely relate to!

  • People think you’ve gone bonkers - Really! At first, I was gleeful at the total shock on people’s faces when they saw my hair but later on it just made me really annoyed. Why would people think they can tell me what to do with my hair? What was really the big deal in choosing to embrace my natural, God-given mane? It drove me crazy but I kind of got to understand that a lot of times, people associate cutting your hair with negativity; for example, cancer patients who lose their hair because of the sickness amongst others.
Over time though, I guess they’ve gotten used to seeing me with my new hair style!

  • It can be really tough if you’ve never taken care of natural hair before - You see, relaxed hair is very different from natural hair. If you’re one of those who grew up getting your hair relaxed consistently and with 100% dedication to that ritual even when you’re grown - it will be really hard to take care of your natural hair. Some girls don’t even know what their hair texture is like! Not to worry though, there’s tons of information I’ve put up on this website to help you.

  • You have no idea what to do with your hair now - There’s the thinking that having natural hair limits your styling options… well, it’s yes and no. When I just had my big chop, I didn’t really bother trying to style my hair, I just let it be my teeny-weeny afro (it was less than tiny though. Lol!) Not everyone might want to do this so here is where your creativity comes into play! Experiment and find what works for you. And remember, you always have the option of wearing a wig!

  • Then, everyone is keeping track of your hair growth - You get questions like, is your hair even growing? And then you start to feel perhaps you shouldn’t have and every morning you’re pulling those tender strands hoping 1 inch of growth has happened overnight. Please chill! It’s really up to you to shut out all the voices and people that will make you feel that you made the wrong decisions. If possible, don’t be around them as much.
  • h but find people who have experienced what you’re going through.

  • You’re confused as to if you’re to go back to your old stylist since you no longer relax your hair - This one can be big time annoying! Especially there’s more regular stylists than actual natural hair stylists to take care of your hair.
Well, like many who have done the big chop, I did a lot of DIYs (like you will find on this site) to take care of my hair and experiment so I knew what I wanted the next time I headed to the salon. It is cheaper and will help you to know what works and what doesn’t - for your hair.

  • Be careful though! You will come across millions of advice on how to take care and grow your natural hair and some might be right but still will not apply to you. It is up to you to take your time, ditch the growth anxiety and just focus on caring for your hair to the maximum.

It might take a bit of getting used to, especially if rocking short hair is not your thing. It means a new hair routine, new products; some people even cry after cutting their hair. I promise it’s all worth it in the end.
