Foods that are Great For Your Healthy Hair Growth

You are what you eat, but you already knew that. What you may not know however, is that what you eat is also directly connected to your hair growth.

Talking about healthy hair, what many would suggest is tons and tons of hair care products forgetting that the key to healthy hair is proper nutrition to help improve the hair look and feel as well as the skin and nails too. Hair grows from the follicles and so the one way to really improve hair growth is to target the follicles where hair grows from and the scalp as well. Most chemical based hair products can try, but cannot penetrate as deep which is why you should improve hair growth with a balance of organic products and an improved diet. 


Your hair grows and dies and gets replaced; your hair follicles need nutrients from the body in order to grow new hair. Also, your hair strength tends to diminish as you grow older which is why it is important you eat a diet that directly targets hair nutrition in order to boost your hair health. Your hair grows at the average pace of 0.5 inches per month and 6 inches a year and this is not considering   other factors like age, genetics, health, and diet too. While these other factors  can largely be out of your control, one thing you can do to improve hair growth is eating the right food. 


As a matter of fact, eating the wrong kind of diet can lead to hair loss as it means you are deficient in some necessary nutrients which your hair needs to flourish. Processed or packaged foods are generally nutrient-poor and they have preservatives and additives which can wreak havoc on your body system. Replacing this with a more natural diet will help not just your hair but your entire body system.


Consuming the right type of food can help with your hair regrowth especially if you are experiencing hair loss as a result of a bad diet. Certain food nutrients like Vitamins D, C, E, biotin, iron, zinc, omega 3; help with hair growth and quality.

That being said, here are some foods that you can eat to help with hair growth:


  • Eggs: Eggs are the number one food to eat to foster hair growth; your hair follicles are made up of mostly protein and guess what is a great source of proteins? Well, eggs of course! Protein deficiency in the body has also been linked to hair loss. 
  • Eggs also contain selenium, zinc, Vitamins A, B12, D, and other nutrients that promote healthy hair which is why eggs are commonly used to make hair masks as they have a lot to offer your hair in terms of strengthening it and giving it that shine you’ve always wanted. 

    It also has Vitamin C which aids the growth of new follicles and increases hair density or reduces hair loss.

    While you can use it on your hair as a DIY hair mask, you can also add this to your diet to boost hair growth from the inside out.


  • Spinach: Spinach is a green vegetable that has loads of nutrients that are necessary for hair growth like Vitamins A and C, iron, magnesium, and folate. While Vitamin A helps the skin to produce sebum and sebum is what keeps your scalp moisturized and healthy.
  • Spinach is also a great source of iron which is also known to be essential for hair growth. Iron helps red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body and helps to grow and also repair your hair. Iron deficiency can also be linked to hair loss. Vitamin C in spinach also helps to protect the cell membranes of the hair follicles.


  • Fatty fish: Fish is a high source of protein; fatty fishes like salmon, tuna, and mackerel are excellent sources of Omega-3 acid which boosts hair growth, shine and increases hair density. Your body cannot produce these nutrients and so you get them by eating foods or supplements that contain them.
  • These fishes also contain selenium as well as Vitamins B and D3. Aside from the hair benefits, consumption of fatty fish also reduces the risk of heart diseases.

    Salmon also has other properties that help your body, like reducing inflammation for example. 

    Sardines are another alternate source of Omega 3 and Vitamin D.


  • Avocado: This is a great source of healthy fats and they are as delicious as they are nutritious. Avocados are a high source of Vitamin E which is an antioxidant that helps in the removal of oxidative agents that can potentially damage the skin. Vitamin E also protects the scalp from oxidative stress or damage, which can result in reduced hair density. They also contain biotin and are an active ingredient in much DIY hair and skin masks.
  • Avocados are also a source of essential fatty acids that cannot be produced by the body but are essential building blocks of your cell. They are crucial for hair growth and a deficiency in fatty acids can lead to hair loss.


  • Nuts (Walnuts, Almonds, coconut oil): Nuts are tasty, and have a variety of nutrients that promote hair growth as well as healthy hair. They contain Vitamin B and E, zinc, and fatty acids; all of these each help hair flourish in their own way. Peanut for example, is a great source of biotin, antioxidants that aid hair growth and prevent hair loss.
  • Asides nourishing the hair, nuts also provide other health benefits to your body system which makes it a healthy addition to your diet.


  • Sweet Pepper: Sweet peppers are a very high source of Vitamin C, which is known to aid hair growth in tremendous proportions. They have even more Vitamin C than citrus fruits like orange (about 5 times more), surprised? Me too!
  • Sweet pepper encourages the production of collagen, a protein that helps to strengthen hair and prevents it from becoming brittle and breaking eventually. It also has antioxidants that protect against damage from free radicals.

    It is also a source of Vitamin A which helps to speed up hair growth while stimulating the growth of sebum which moisturizes and keeps hair and scalp healthy.


  • Beans, Lentils, Peas: All of these are considered pulses (which are the dry edible seeds of vegetables. They have high levels of plant-based protein and fiber which makes them very nutritious for your hair and body. 
  • Lentils, peas have folic acid which helps to keep hair healthy and also renews cells which are vital for hair growth.

    Beans is a high protein source and protein is one nutrient that is very essential to hair growth. Aside from protein, beans are also rich in zinc which aids hair growth and also assists hair regrowth cycle. 

    Beans also contain other hair-healthy nutrients like folate, biotin, iron all of which help with hair regrowth. 

    The best thing about beans is that it is very versatile; it can be made into a variety of edibles. Also, it is quite affordable too so you can easily add this to your diet.


  • Meat (Red Meat): Meat is a very common staple in many people’s daily meals. It is quite rich in nutrients, for example, it is high in protein which helps to strengthen and repair hair follicles. 
  • Red meat specifically has iron properties that are very easily absorbed by the body and this nutrient helps the red blood cells deliver oxygen to the hair follicle, aiding hair growth. 


  • Seeds: Seeds have a relatively low amount of calories but high nutrient content like Vitamin E, zinc, and selenium.
  • Seeds like sunflower seeds, chia seeds flax seeds provide essential nutrients for hair growth. Flax and chia seeds have Omega 3 fatty acids and they are a great source for nutrients for vegetarians. They nourish your scalp, provide moisturizing content, and prevent dryness.

    Chia seeds are a protein powerhouse, rich in antioxidants and can easily be added to your cereals, smoothies, puddings or other meals to spice it up healthily.


  • Sweet Potato: This food has high levels of beta-carotene which is an antioxidant that transforms into Vitamin A when in the body. This protects against dry or brittle hair.
  • Aside from these benefits for hair, sweet potatoes also contribute to the immunity of your body and aid better vision.


  • Citrus fruits: Like orange, tangerines, lemon, lime; are very rich in Vitamin C which helps to nourish your hair. Vitamin C is very important for iron absorption 
  • Vitamin C is also required for the production of collagen, which helps to ensure the supply of nutrients to the hair shaft, promoting hair growth.


    Asparagus, oysters, shrimp, soybeans, berries, Greek yoghurt, oatmeal, chicken, carrots are also some other great foods that can promote hair growth.


    Some of these can also be used to make DIY hair masks to hydrate and protect your mane. (Ingredients that can be found in your kitchen to promote healthy hair); so do not limit yourself to just eating them. Your hair deserves special care and it’s your responsibility to give it just that.


    What you eat has a direct effect on your hair health which is why you have to be intentional about it. A lack of these essential vitamins like Vitamins A, B, C, D3, E, iron, folate, protein, can trigger hair loss or slow down hair growth.


    However, you can correct this deficiency by adding these nutrients to your diet in order to repair your hair and promote hair regrowth. You don’t have to be focused on just these nutrients but ensure that you have a balanced diet as that is what matters.
